Collection: Campo del Cielo iron meteorite
A meteorite thin section from The Curchin Collection
What is Campo del Cielo?
The Campo del Cielo meteorite was first found in 1576 in Argentina. Since then, several fragments of this approximately 50 ton iron octahedrite have been found across Chaco and Santiago del Estero provinces. Mainly a solid iron meteorite, our thin section of “Campo” contains nodules of silicate minerals minerals mixed with graphite and metals.
Under the Microscope
In transmitted, cross-polarized light, our Campo sample looks like a stained glass panel. The silicate minerals, mostly olivine, are a colorful display against the black-out backdrop of metal and graphite.
