Sustainability is one of our core values…

At Terra Persona, it is important to us that we consider the impact of our actions on the world around us. Buzz words like sustainability are often tossed around by companies without any backing. However, our words and our work must be authentic. Before launching our online store, we spent a year researching ways to develop products that meet our ideal standards. We delved into the details of how fabrics are made, the pros and cons of cotton versus bamboo, recycled polyester fabrics, manufacturing consistency, the requirements of different printing processes, how to get our designs onto products with the best color quality, and what type of production is within our budget. The list goes on and on…

The result?   We found that it is very challenging to meet all of our standards for sustainability at this time, but we are constantly striving to improve in every way possible. We are questioning potential manufacturers and pushing boundaries on what is available for a bootstrapping retail business. We know that as we grow and generate additional capital to put toward larger production, we can increase our sustainability measures.

What are Terra’s current sustainability measures?

Water and Energy Conservation  One of our fabric manufacturers has developed a method to cut water and energy consumption dramatically.  Any of our products made from performance knit (leggings and skirts), spun polyester (beanies) and silky knit (headbands) are all made with Eco-Polyester. Eco-Polyester is produced in a way that uses 70% less water and 70% less energy than traditional polyester manufacturing. From the manufacturer: Producing one meter of regular polyester fabric by the traditional method uses 13 liters of water and 29000 kilojoules of energy. Eco-poly uses only 3.9 litres of water and 8700 kilojoules of energy to produce the same amount of fabric. Saving water and energy – we’re okay with that!

Material conservation  Waste not, want not… right? Recognizing the need for sustainability measures across the board is paramount to changing the overall impact budget, and luckily sustainability measures often increase profit by reducing cost. Our manufacturer strives to reduce waste in the printing process by maximizing fabric efficiency, thus reducing off-cuts around the printing margins. They also minimize waste from production errors by donating slightly flawed items to charities or organizations that can use them. Another plus is that our designs are printed using water-based inks, reducing toxic VOC’s during production and for you, the consumer!

Reduced carbon footprint  > In shipping  All of our fabric-based products (ie. leggings, beanies, etc.) are printed, cut, and sewn on-demand by a group of artisans in Canada. Then it is shipped directly to you, the customer – removing a step in the typical shipping process of shipping to a company’s central location and then to the customer. Additionally, the fabric in most of our products is also produced very close to our manufacturer, so the shipping distance is minimal. Both of these steps keep our product to customer carbon footprint low – something we are quite happy about and hope you are too!  >For our website  Energy use estimates for web hosting servers is increasing rapidly and is on pace to surpass jet fuel pollution in the coming decades. We’ve chosen a green hosting platform for our website. Not only are they built to be as energy efficient as possible, but they also invest 3x the energy used in the form of renewable energy via Bonneville Environmental FoundationRead more here.

Virtual office  We both work out of our homes in the Denver metro area, and most of our meetings are done over video chat or phone. Not having an office saves us money and also significantly reduces our overall impact on resources. This means less energy to heat and light an office, less fuel for driving, and less air pollution contributing to Denver’s ever present air quality issues. Another benefit of working remotely is our low paper consumption, and it’s easy thanks to modern technology. We strive to be paper free in our daily operation.

Our ongoing mission to improve

We realize that our sustainability goals will always remain a work in progress. Our promise to you is that sustainability will be at the forefront as our business grows and we have more control over how our products are made. We will continue to challenge our vendors and partners to innovate and adopt greener practices. As a community, our power is shown through our deliberate purchases, and we hope to meet your standards.

If you feel sustainability is important in the products you purchase and have suggestions or like what we are doing, shoot us a tweet, instagram or facebook post. We love to hear your feedback!
